In the Kitchen

natcooking1.jpg

Some of my favorite memories from childhood involve the kitchen. When I was a kid, my grandmother Garcia would corral me into helping her roll tortillas. I wasn't (and still am not) all that careful about creating a perfect circle when rolling them out, and she would point at my work and say "there's Texas, and California, and Florida..." then laugh in a way that let me know she was teasing. To this day, the smell of cooking tortillas makes me think of her and the kitchen in Beeville.

Tonight, we had fideo and tortillas for dinner and Natalie helped make the main dish. I put the spices into small bowls, and she added them to the pot and stirred them in. She had fun doing it, and I enjoyed watching how seriously she took the task of making sure the spices were thoroughly added.

Next lesson? Tortilla rolling.
