Another Working Weekend

compostbin.jpg
Behold the ugly!

I built this.

My goal? To lower the property value of my house to keep the assessment vultures at bay.

Well, and to hold/create compost. (Definition here for you city-dwellers) Gardens like dead things, and compost is full of them. Since we're gardening now, I figured starting some compost would be a good idea. And because we have critters and live in the city, a compost pile that included food scraps would be untidy, so I built this horror to hold what is basically a pile of rotting material.

It's ugly because I figured I'd use wood I had on hand from tearing down various shelves and other useless structures around the house and barn instead of spending $100 at Home Depot. The bin is going to hold smelly decaying things - no reason to get fancy.

I know I didn't exactly build this thing to compost-perfectionist specifications, but oh well. I figure the stuff will rot eventually, I just want to keep the groundhogs and skunks out of it. My in-laws have a compost pile that is basically just a pile in the woods, and it produces some fine smelly rich soil. I figure this will do.

Time for those earthworms to get to work!

Eventually, we'll be able to eat this...

A garden update. The plants seem to be doing well. We just might get some food out of this thing.

im in ur garden, growing in ur cagez

Of course, the day wasn't all work. I spent part of it at the guy playground better known as the dump. Friends and I had some stuff to throw away, and in the process of getting rid of it, broke all the glass we could find.

But not before we hacked a chair to death with a sledgehammer.

All in all, a good day.

Our Expressive Child (so unlike her mother)

Let me just say for the record that her Daddy taught her how to growl like this. That having been said, I'm pretty impressed with her play at this age. So fun to watch! Thank you Katie Oulton for the wonderful new toy!

Her first experience with spaghetti, or "skeddis" as we Heffners know them, was obviously successful! Couldn't keep it on her tray fast enough. But she still had time to stop and mug for the camera :)

City Folk Get Back to Nature :)

garden.jpg

So we're trying our hand at growing our food this year. I grew up with a huge garden, but it's a new experience for Peter. With the help of our friends the Bloodworths' truck (yay Steve and Jess!!)we got our dirt on Saturday, an odiferous, fishy compost blend. That same day Peter built us a fence to keep out the critters. Tomorrow I will plant tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and beans. If all goes well, we should be eating homegrown BLTs by August...all we need is a pig for the bacon. :)
