Racism in Hawaii?

The answer to Instapundit's question is yes. As I've mentioned before on this blog, I lived in Hawaii for three years in the late 80s and saw first-hand some of the disdain many in that state have for "haoles." Nothing like being spit upon to make a guy feel unwelcome.

Judging from the comments Instapundit is receiving, the problems have only gotten worse. In my limited experience with Hawaiian law enforcement, I found the officers to be courteous and professional. When I was there, school administrators were the worst of the 'see no evil' crowd. After repeatedly being harassed and/or assaulted at school, I complained to the vice principal. His advice? Just avoid certain parts of the campus. As far as he was concerned, it wasn't his job to stop, it was mine to retreat. Even though stuff like this happened.

When I lived in Hawaii, my friends and I referred to the racial animosity as the other side of paradise. As the Hawaiian sovereignty movement gains steam, I expect we'll hear more about the Hawaii that the state's tourism bureau has managed to hide.

What? You like beef?

Hey they want to be independent...let them. No federal funding, supply own military etc.. Watch what happens.

I hung enough outside and got my stringy hair long enough to be considered a local, but no one that hasn't lived there can understand the idiocy of that racial divide.
those elementary and even high school kids never saw they were just like us. half breeds. No one in Hawaii has any justification for being there.
there isn't enough pure hawaiian blood with the lot of them, to fill a cup.
they're locals only as conquerors can be, mostly japanese and philipino.
trust me, those locals aren't going to win any sort of Nobel prize. if they can still read.

oh my point, racism is probably more relevent in Hawaii then anywhere else.
half of them think they are destined to be there, and the other half or too ignorant to despite the rest.

Posted by: coldmexican at September 2, 2009 11:11 PM

they hate the tourists, yet can't do without them.

Posted by: coldmexican at September 2, 2009 11:12 PM

you got a black eye even with a Rotc high school. I don't have much hope for anything that school has to say, I'm sure it's too busy trying to suck up to the locals.

Posted by: coldmexican at September 2, 2009 11:26 PM

don't ever listen to the locals of hawaii.
they're not actual persons that were normally there
they claim to be, and shit on everyone that comes after them
i'm sure it hasn't changed since I left

There is racism everywhere and Hawaii should not be singled out. I am white and from the mainland (been here since 1994) and I do not catch any grief....then again, I do not go to Waianae or Waimanalo after dark.

Posted by: HawaiiLwyr at September 4, 2009 12:05 PM

Taaay:
We go to Waianae High Schooland yes, theres a lot of racism. Its hard and it isn't right. I have experienced racism. But its actually a great school to go to!!! (:

Kayy:
Even though I was born and raised in Waianae, I sometimes get treated just as badly as the tourists do. And yes, we may have racism in our school but we also have good students who try to stray away from that sort of path. So before you judge, dont judge EVERYONE.

Let's see, invade a foriegn country, overthrow their elected goverenment, ban their language, steal everything in their palace, run the country with out giving them the vote for 70 years, flood their country with migrants, use all their natural resources to grow pineapples and suger cane, blow their islands up for target practice, dump ammo waste into the ocean and kill their fisherys and they're the RACISTS? You have no respect for them so they give you none...

Yes, by all means...justify the hate. Nice work. And no, I have no respect for those who inflict violence upon people who had nothing to do with the outrages you rail against. Still, if believing such nonsense helps you live with your bitterness, then I suppose you're welcome to it. -S.

Justification provided by Amerika. Respect? Have never and will never recieve it from a country thats built upon the backs and bones of slaves and the genocide of native peoples in their homeland. Nonesense? Take a look at Iraq. Why don't you just add lots of that sweet HawaiianBloodSugar to ease that bitterness you have with your country's long history of lies thieft and bigotry.

My, my...you are quite an angry little waianeae boy, aren't you? Despite myself, I almost find myself feeling sorry for you. It must take a considerable amount of energy to perpetuate your anger. What's sad is that you could so easily use that energy to pursue more worthy goals than hatred. As I said, I almost feel sorry for you. My sympathy, however, is limited by my experience with your ilk. It's clear to me your interest in history is shallow, as it does nothing more than serve as a convenient rationale for your thoughts and actions. I sincerely hope you can allow yourself to get past such simpleminded notions.

Until then, though, I suggest you get your own blog to vent your bitter spleen. You're done here, as I'm no longer willing to have the bandwidth I pay for used for such naked and mindless bigotry. Best, -S

I just left Hawaii for the third time, after I bought some property 6 months ago. The truth is that that hapa haole japanese in the islands have no problems openly discriminating against white mainlanders. Moreover, any white mainlanders coming to Hawaii have very little chance to be given a job unless they work for themselves. Aloha is a concept that is not practiced in Hawaii unless you have money and you are spending it in the resorts. Sure people do smile a lot, but is does not mean that they will allow you to ever "belong" there. The sad thing that a lot of people claim to be "hawaiian or part, but the only thing they share is a deep suntan and dark hair; they tend to be the most racist ones.

Racism seems to be taught at a young age in Hawaii...

One problem I had is that I was brought to Hawaii from the mainland for work...and for months we had contractors (or people paid dirt cheap to act like contractors) picketing outside our place of business because they didn't get the job to build our site. It's as if there is some sort of entitlement that they should be able to charge whatever they want for a job and if they don't win the bid they picket? Nonsense. It's called free open market and without it your box of cheerios would cost $15 instead of $6. I wouldn't pay you more so you could afford the gas for your over sized gas-guzzling pick-up truck.

Yes hate and racism in these islands are incredibly wrong. But many people feel they need it to protect their lands from becoming "invaded" because of the past. I have lived in the islands for my entire life and they have shared much bitterness with everybody no matter what race you are. For goodness sake I'm hawaiian and they think they are better then I am.
America is one of the most diversified countries in the world so of course people would share ill will for we are different and some cannot bare the thought of changes in the world.

WOW is it really this Bad, I was thinking of making my first trip Hawaii in 2010. I am a African American male, and even with the election of a Black man as president of the US, I deal with the race issue still in Georgia on a regular bases.

Not sure I want to spend my hard earned money to go halfway around the world for something that appears to be more prevalent in Hawaii.

Any suggestions folks, I wanted to go to the North Shore, take surf lessons just to say that I have surfed the North Shore but it sounds like its pre civil rights in paradise? Any suggestions where to stay where, not to stay where to go where not to go?

You can't blame the native Hawaiians. They are uneducated and bitter. Instead of trying to better themselves and their culture (ie getting off their fat asses, putting the drugs and booze away, reading a book and getting a job), they lash out at "outsiders". They'll still be crying about Captain Cook in a 1000 years.

Brianna, have fun at the north shore , there is a house owned by an artist, named Ron Artis Jr, he also plays music there almost daily, His dad was keyboard player for sly Stone for 15 years, I met him at a blues festival once, great folks, big family, then go dig the north shore, forget about all this racist bullshit, although much of it true, but if you stay in the popular areas you can have a great time and not worry, stay off the homeless beaches on the west side etc, people will tell you where not to go, just believe them and don't go there and go to the fun places and have no worries, have a shave ice play with the fish and relax.....

This island IS definitely Racist. I'm here now...AND this whole blog explains a lot. I will never come to this WHORE of an island again.

PS. The beaches in CALI are FARRRR better than these rocky, pebble beaches.

i am a nursing student and i plan to move to oahu 2 years after i graduate. today i was talking to a friend and he said his brother in law moved because of the racism. he was a white nurse and he finally got fed up with the discrimnation at the work place. also i have two boys and a wife. i told her i would move to oahu but i dont want my boys to be discriminated. my wife lived there for 6 years and said we would be accepted as she was. i told her she was only accepted because she was hot. she told me that it is about the attitude you have. she said if you are cool and respect the people then respect would be given in return. if i move there i would want to be able to go wherever i want to go on the island. if i am paying taxes it is my right and i dont want to be afraid of the locals.

Posted by: Anonymous at August 18, 2010 05:41 PM

if you are afraid of the locals, it is your own fault.

The "natives" can be mean to pale-skinned people (if you're tan with dark hair, you'll probably get along fine) but you just have to take it with a grain of salt. Ignorance is rampant in Hawaii, half the people barely know their own culture. I have to bite my tongue every time someone says that Haole means breathless or that Pele is a fire goddess (ha'ole means breathless, it's an entirely different word, and Pele is a Volcano goddess. Lava & fire are not the same thing. women were not permitted to start fires in ancient hawaii) ....but i don't speak up because the "natives" would get pissed if a Haole girl started correcting them.

I keep saying "natives" in quotation marks, because these people are fooling themselves. There are barely any real natives left, almost everyone is biracial. We're moving towards a global society anyway. Either face facts or get left behind. If Hawaii was not an American state, it would be a poverty-stricken ghetto. I'm not saying that to be mean, look at other tropical islands. Look at places like Haiti. That's what Hawaii would be like if it was not a state. What happened in Hawaii as far as colonization goes was not that bad. If you want bad, look at the belgian colonization of the Congo.

So seriously, Hawaiians need to stop playing the victim card and grow up. They need to start educating themselves and stop bitching about skin color.
