Taking Treacher's Advice

As the last two posts indicate, my mind hasn't exactly been on politics lately. So I've been going the cold turkey route. But instead of relaxing with a book or a movie, I've been destroying an upstairs room in order to save it. Today ended the destruction phase of the project - now it's time to re-wire, insulate and sheetrock. Oh, joy.

The fact that I live in a nearly or over 100-year-old house will make the sheetrocking all the more fun. Current building code requires wall studs to be 16 inches on center. The distance between studs in this room are more 'whatever the builders felt like making them while nailing the house together in a drunken frenzy.' While figuring out how much insulation I need, I wrote out the measurements between studs on one wall - 5.75", 8.75", 8.25", 14.25", 17.75". 13.5" and 14.25". Clearly, the people who built this house weren't exactly into standardization.

They were, however, into nails. Especially the square type that are impossible to remove with a crowbar. Still, as frustrating as this project has been, it's given me a chance to simply work for hours without checking email or the blogs for the latest political news. And it's been great.

I'm sure I'll have more to say as Inauguration Day gets closer, but at this point I'm just going to concentrate on finishing this project and getting my older daughter moved into her "big girl room," as she calls it. So please don't be surprised or irritated if the updates consist of mindless links for the next few days.

I'm always a font for useless links so you can count on me. Although I might be otherwise engaged when it comes to drywalling your ceiling =P
You should start reading books again, especially the one a gave you a couple months ago. :)

I've gotta say, I've been avoiding politics as much as possible, too, although that's largely because I'm surrounded by liberals who are poor sports about winning. Ugh.

just be silent, when they whine about the taxes, just be prepared to say I told you so.

Having grown up in an old house, I thought it was fabulous fun and couldn't understand my father's grumbling whenever he had to fix something. Wiring was especially annoying for him.

So as beautiful as old houses are, I do understand what you're going through.

Have fun.

I have to say that is what I have been doing. I've totally withdrawn from politics and reading political blogs. Time to do something else.
