Outrageously! Outrageous! Outrage!

What's got me so incensed? Is it the stock market crash and the horror that is this month's IRA statement? Another lie by Barack Obama or the Democrats? A new tax implemented by the state government?

No. All of these issues are troubling, but at the moment, this is what has me full of heart-ache:

Yes, they've gotten rid of Moxie man. If you're not from New England and have never had the privilege of tasting heaven's gift to soda drinkers, you're missing out. Of course, it is something of an acquired taste. Although I enjoy it, some have blasphemously said Moxie is what it would taste like if you carbonated Robitussin. Still, it has a loyal following that included celebrities like Ted Williams, E.B. White and Calvin Coolidge. It's Maine's official soft drink.

And this used to be the logo:

moxie1.jpg

Cool retro pointing guy versus stupid swirly logo that makes it look as though Moxie is a form of detergent. A version of pointing guy has been with Moxie since the beginning. What's maddening is that instead of creating a logo with some sense of tradition, the bottling company created this thing. There's nothing that sets it apart. It's bland corporate, committee-produced bleh. What's strange is that Moxie is unlikely to really expand its consumer base in a big way - Moxie is one of those things you either love or hate. And most of its customers, being from New England, aren't all that fond of change.

In a probably futile gesture, Moxie drinkers have united in online protest to resist the change. There's an online petition, but I'm guessing that since Moxie's appeal probably skews a bit older, many of the diehard fans might not spend a ton of time online. Here's the site:

Sign the petition!

Are you kidding? My mom's going to have a fit. I have that stuff shipped down by the case for her. Granted, it may taste the same, but as you say, Change Is Bad.

Moxie drinkers are dying out faster then new ones are coming on to the drink. It's a fossil of better days gone by.

I hate the stuff, but my Dad loved it and I had a fit when I saw the new logo in the supermarket (where I was buying Polar Orange Dry and Golden Ginger Ale, hope that gives me some cred even if I don't like moxie); I would sign the petition but it's 404.
