Joe the Plumber for President!
John McCain started well, but missed some major, major opportunities. I'm not as pessimistic as ace, but I am extremely disappointed. He needed to hit Obama hard, and failed to do so.
Barack Obama had a much better closing statement, but his smirking, nodding at the moderator and laughing may play about as well as Al Gore's sighs. The comment that Instapundit quotes from the McCain staffer seems about right - he seemed irritated that he had to go through this debate because in his mind, it's clear he's already won this thing. That arrogance showed, and it wasn't pretty.
Also, if the McCain ad people are on their game, Obama's refusal to repudiate John Lewis should be pointed out. Obama not only refused to criticize Lewis, he flat-out lied about the level of Lewis' contriteness. Lewis says he has "no regrets" about comparing McCain and Palin to George Wallace. Doesn't sound like much of a repudiation to me.
And if you're wondering what 't-shirts' John McCain was referring to, click here. Mega content and blood-pressure warning on that link. Next time you hear Obama or his supporters whine about hateful rhetoric, keep the image of that t-shirt in your mind.
Overall, the debate was a wash, which is exactly what McCain didn't need. Tonight: pessimism. Tomorrow: Sarah Palin rally.
Okay - I decided to listen to the debate without the audio. I didn't get all the way through, but when you hear what was said without the distractions, McCain sounded far more authoritative, sure of his answers and quick with specifics. Obama stuttered quite a bit more than I remembered, spoke mostly in generalities and interrupted McCain far too many times.
McCain won this one on points. I hope people were paying attention to what was said and not how 'cool' Obama looked. (Even though he didn't look cool at all - his irritability showed).

It's funny, because a friend of mine who is an Obama supporter kept commenting on McCain's eye-rolling, sighing, etc., while saying Obama always kept a straight face. It makes we wonder how both of you could have watched the same debate (I didn't see it myself). But debates are for the undecideds, anyway.
