Palin Pregnancy Reveals Media Ignorance
The media seems to love the story of Bristol Palin's pregnancy. Maybe a little too much.
According to a strikingly gentle story in Time, the town of Wasilla has known about Palin's pregnancy for some time and basically figured it was no one's business. I'm inclined to believe the country will think the same way, but some of Obama's supporters seem to think they've got a political winner on their hands, even though their candidate has warned against pursuing this story.
Amazingly, so does the media, who have been pushing the story. Ace has figured out the subliminal message behind the coverage. That message shows just how ignorant the media is about mainstream evangelical culture. The days of puritanical shaming are over, if they ever really existed. What the media doesn't seem to realize is that evangelicals live in the real world - most of us know someone who has gotten pregnant out of wedlock and we've come to grips with our ever-sexualized culture.
The issue is not the pregnancy (although such things are regrettable), it's how a woman and a family responds to the news. Palin and her family have responded with class, compassion and most importantly - a respect for the life young Bristol is carrying. That's what attracts evangelical voters - the fact that she chose life and encouraged her daughter to do the same. The already-energized base will be insane with support for Palin after this news.
Of course, this won't stop the left from trying to create a storyline. Dear heavens, they're desperate and pathetic. It begs the question - if Palin is such a terrible pick for McCain, why are the media and the left going after her and her family with such viciousness?
Okay, Maverick. Gustav is not the hellstorm it was predicted to be and the media is frothing at your running mate. Time to start the convention and start setting a message. If you don't, then the conservative trust you gained by picking Palin will dissipate as quickly as the now-inland storm.
That having been said, though, I'm pretty appalled at the media's willingness to use a 17-year-old girl as a political weapon against the Republicans. It's one thing to be in the tank for Obama. It's another to drag a minor through the mud to help the guy you've chosen.
Update - Well, hello talking points! Like ace, I'm happy to see so many new commenters making already-tired points.
If I needed any further proof how shaken the left is by this pick, the almost-organized comment/email bombs are it.
Multitudes? - Looking at the comments, one would think there is a vast army of people opposed to Palin's pick. Or, you know, it might just be one person with a wee bit too much time on their hands:
Not fooled - 12.48.35
Maggie - 12.48.35
Jilli - 12.48.35
That's not their full ip address - just enough to make the point. The sockpuppeting has begun.

Well, it appears as though the Queen of the DC Social Circuit is giving The Deciders the Green Light to pursue the story.
I kinda hope they overplay this deal and get shocked when it backfires on them.

What hypocrites the conservatives are. Imagine if the shoe was on the other foot. That it was one of Obama's girl's that was pregnant. Then all these self righteous kooks would be all over the place talking about morality and parental responsibility. But now because it is one of their own, they are all fawning over this kid and admiring her bravery in choosing to have this baby. What a load of garbage.
My question is, if you cannot even have control and take care of your own kids, what kind of leader are you going to be (supposedly one heart beat away from being a president)

I totally agree with the hypocrisy line!! Where is all this love and forgiveness when it is a democrat?? And, when did teenage pregnancy become vogue?? Certainly wasn't in when it was young Black females getting pregnant and having the baby. None of them were applauded as champions of pro-life!

CNN's coverage of this issue today has almost left me speechless (and that takes some doing)from Campbell Brown to Larry King they showed their obvious bias. I have never seen such a disgusting display of tabloid journalism in my entire life, it was too revolting to watch.
All this has left me wondering if they are going to do a segment on Joe Biden's lies about his wife being killed by a drunk driver (he was not charged, the accident was HER fault)Curtis C. Dunn died a broken man becaue of those lies.

Not sure if the story about Palin's daughter being the mother of Trig is true, however; we should leave it alone for now. If Palin comes out before this baby Bristol is carrying is born and says the she miscarried, she's lying. That is the oldest trick in the book.

Who cares about the pregnancy ... she's sympathetic to secessionists! How the heck is that good for our "United" States??
Posted by: Flotsam at September 2, 2008 02:53 AM
Not all conservatives are applauding this. I, for one, am shocked by this news. As a Republican, I was excited by Palin's nomination. Despite all the immediate mud-slinging by the Democrats about her inexperience, I still thought it was a brilliant move since her inexperience isn't such a big deal since she's going to be VP not President.
I even wasn't fazed by the Down syndrome baby. I questioned her judgment in having a fifth baby at the age of 44 (unless you're going for your first or second one, a woman trying for a baby when she's over 40 is being stupid in my eyes), but I let it pass. The whole teenage pregnancy thing brought all that back to the forefront.
I think it shows how irresponsible Palin is in raising her daughter. If she can't control her teenager, can I trust her to control cut-throat Washington politicians? I think it would've been much better if her family kept a much more clean image. The Down syndrome baby seemed like a mistake on her part. The teenage pregnancy is mistake number two, and I don't think it's a coincidence.
Will I still vote McCain? For now, yes. However, if this keeps up, my vote may change.

i was really hoping that moral issues would stay out of this election. Not that moral issues aren't important, but there are a lot of other very important things happening with the economy and foreign affairs. How can we get anything done w/Iraq, Russia, or Afghanistan if people are worried about Palin's daughter's baby? How can we stop the American economy from another depression if we are arguing about abortion (an argument which will probably NEVER end)? Palin's daughter being pregnant shouldn't have anything to do with McCain's or Obama's campaign. If there is anyone out there who would seriously consider changing their vote based on this issue then I have lost all faith in the American political system. If you are conservative...she didn't have an abortion...if you are liberal...who cares? I am really disappointed that there is this much discussion being generated on this issue.

How old is the guy?
Should he be in jail?
If he's 18, then guantanamo.

GOVERNING 5000 PEOPLE does not qualify you to govern the UNITED STATES.
She bascially has experience governing what is equivalent to a high school.
The republicans/evangelicals are HYPOCRITS.
This may be an indication as to why the church is so screwed up.
They have jumped on Obama for inexperience and they choose someone who has experience running what is basically a HIGH SCHOOL.

I do not think this is irrelevent to the Presidential race.
If poloticians want to put their children on the stage, repetitively announce their son's enlistment and deployment to Iraq, and use their children's disabilities as evidence of their own character, then it is ALL relevent!
A father or mother of a child with special needs, such as teen pregnancy and/or Down Syndrome, has no business committing to serve as president or vice president; thus, taking all their time away from their children to run our country.
In this case, there are 2 children of special needs. To be campaigning for the presidency under such circumstances is flat out neglect and self-serving.
This is compounded by the fact that the public is being served an argument that Ms. Palin is such an exceptional woman that we, the public are to ignore her obvious lack of political experience.
There are plenty of others qualified to fill the position. Ms. Palin need not sacrifice the interests of her children to serve Karl Rove.

SO, SO TRUE..I too am in total agreement about the hypocrisy...and whats crazier is that the "right's" spin is that the left is spinning you... by the time its all said and done you wont know which way is up...a blatant insult of people's intelligence. If it was anybody else...there wouldn't be enough room in all of creation for forgiveness...
"What the media doesn't seem to realize is that evangelicals live in the real world - most of us know someone who has gotten pregnant out of wedlock and we've come to grips with our ever-sexualized culture." Probably the most hypocritical line in the entire article, it's such an obvious attempt to save face for this lackluster pick...Its SpinDoctory at its finest...Take all the worst case scenarios, make her and her family and make them the heroes/victims and in that you make her impervious to most attacks, its almost the less you know the better...BUT...it creates a situation where the "evangelicals" are beginning to compromise their principles, and just hoping that everyone is looking to the left, while the "right" pulls its slight (very slight) of hand.

The recent revelation of the daughter's pregnancy should prompt more discussion regarding teenage pregnancy. There are teenage girls choosing to keep their babies. However, not all may have the family support or access to the medical care and education to raise one. Can we discuss this issue? I wonder if Gov. Palin has changed her views on such issues? Is she willing to discuss social programs for teenage girls finding themselves in similar situations?
Posted by: wkh at September 2, 2008 08:15 AM
If it were one of Obama's children in the same situation then then she would be applauded if she chose life. If she chose abortion we'd never know about it.
Don't kid yourself. Conservatives and Christians are real people with real problems and understand that other folks have real problems too.

Well, I guess the fact the Palin's daughter had premarital sex and the reaction from Evang. tells all young people that sex is fine and dandy in our world, have at it kiddos!!
What a shame to condone her actions.

It's a shame that Anderson 360 has to referr to Bristol Palins pregnancy as "is it really a story" and in the process make it a story.
I can offer much more "is it a story" headlines that are important rather than trying to make a tabloid article about a young lady's personal situation. You can just see the pain and fear in her eyes and every mention of the situation by the news just creates pressure on a 17 year old that is not necessary. She may be a tough Alaskan but she is still 17 years old and does not look like she is ready for the pounding by the thoughtless news media.
If you need news leads, how about:
Is it news that the lack of second and third oil fields like those in the Gulf are not available because the politicians decided to stop drilling? What a way to put our country at risk. Call the Russians for more oil in a time of need.
Is it news that we only lost about a gallon of oil into the Gulf during Katrina?
Is it news that the repairs on the oil rigs torn up by the storms will be paid for by the owners not the Federal Government while the Fed will pay billions to move folks out of the storms way because they decided to live in a low tax and low heat cost area rather than a safer more expensive living area of the country. How many times do we have to do this before we say enough is enough?
Is it news that the leading members of Congress are more interested in destroying any idea from the other side of the isle rather than pooling ideas to achieve a goal. If a corporation ran this way they would be bankrupt.
Leave the tabolid news where it belongs, in the supermarket.
Grandpa.

I am very troubled by the positions this religious leaders take than Paulin’s teen pregnancy itself!
Paulin and these evangelicals are supposed to be the moral compass for this country and the young generation.
Just remember the Lynn Spears teen pregnancy outrage or how babies were removed from teen FLDS members just some months ago.
Everyone was up in arms condemning those immoral acts, but today suddenly is not just OK, but also encouraged by the same inquisitors that claim to have a lock on American good moral values.
I am puzzled by the judgment and values of this kind of leaders and I definitely don’t want them as spiritual mentors or examples for my daughter.

Bristol Palin is a walking talking testament to the failures of the evangelical approach to womens issues - birth control and choice. Abstinence only - sure worked for her family right? If abstinence only failed for a stauch supporter like Palin, why on earth would you think it would be effective for others? I look forward to the day when bush is out of the white house and we can take a smarter approach to teenage pregnancy and sex education. The conservative approach just doesn't work. Palins views are too far out of the mainstream. Polls are showing women aren't buying it.

You know what? I'm just going to erase this one. There's a line, folks. Don't cross it.

The palin pick is an insult to women and Americans.
The McCain/Ovaries ticket is wrong if they think that women will vote for her. It's insulting that mccain selected a totally unqualified person for purely political reasons. And to think that McCain believes that women would flock to the ticket just because she's a woman. He's underestimated the intelligence of womenm, and he'll pay for it - the polls already reflect it.
As an American it's insulting that mccain speaks about country first and then blantantly selections someone totally unsuited for the job. What about national security John? I guess that's not so important afterall, huh.
Wish you guys had thought of that before nominating Obama. Might have a stronger argument - ed.
I guess if you want to vote for "any" woman, go ahead and vote for them, but I'd much rather see a competent, experienced and capable woman.
Who do I want to see sitting across from Putin? Certainly not Palin, he'd probably have to explain to her where Russia is.
Obama / Biden is a much better choice.

"Is it news that we only lost about a gallon of oil into the Gulf during Katrina?"
Ah, Grandpa - don't buy the talking points, do a little research because your statement is blatantly false.
Regarding Rita and Katrina -
"The Interior Department, in its revised assessment, said the 124 spills from drilling rigs and pipelines totaled 17,652 barrels, with six of the spills releasing between 1,000 and 2,000 barrels of product.
http://www.enn.com/top_stories/article/4886
The notion that there were no spills is a lie otherwise known as a republican talking point.

oh please....the republicans and conservatives reek with hypocrisy. It's not the fact that the kid is pregnant. That's not what Dems and Inds care about. They care that her mother is running on a platform of family values; is against sex education and wants to teach creationism is schools. This feeling of moral superiority is the problem. So her teenage girl gets pregnant. It's a wonderful thing! Yippee! That's great!!! Now let a minority get pregnant..and they're a burden to society and no this isn't the "race card" it's fact!
No, it's still the race card. And poorly played, to boot.

The issue at hand is not Bristol's choices regarding anything to do with her pregnancy. The issue at hand is Sarah Palin's politics. For starters, she supports abstinence-only education, which clearly does not work. Following that, she has taken her daughter's pregnancy and made it a political point while simultaneously asking for privacy in the matter. Her daughter's pregnancy is in the spotlight because Sarah Palin's politics condemn her daughter's actions, yet Bristol gets away with a public pardon.
I feel sorry for Bristol. Sorry that she has to go through this, and with all of this media attention to boot. But, while they're at it, why don't they pardon Jamie Lynn Spears' mistake and extol her virtues in keeping the baby?
It's just another case of not following your own rules. Be lenient to your friends and stringent to your enemies. I doubt the Evangelicals and conservatives would be so generous if a Democrat's daughter were in this position.
Actually, they probably would if the Democrat's daughter chose to keep the baby. But we'll never know, will we, since the media tends to protect the children of Democrats and not those of the GOP?

>>My question is, if you cannot even have control and take care of your own kids, what kind of leader are you going to be (supposedly one heart beat away from being a president)
About as good a leader as Al Gore would have been, with his pot-smoking, out of control son. Or Joe Biden, with his police-obstructing daughter. Or John Edwards, with his lovechild.
Likewise yourself, commenter. Are your parents responsible for all your mistakes? Are you responsible for your children's mistakes?
