House Republicans: Nancy Hurt Our Feelings, so We Let the Economy Tank

And really...what matters more than feelings?

House Republicans blamed the failure of the $700 billion Wall Street rescue plan Monday on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.), saying that Pelosi had been too partisan in a floor speech prior to the vote. (See the speech here, via CSPAN.)

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R., Ohio) said that Pelosi’s speech “poisoned” the Republican caucus and “caused a number of members we thought we could get to go south.”

“I do believe that we could have gotten there today, had it not been for the partisan speech that the Speaker gave on the floor of the House,” Boehner said. “We put everything we had into getting the vote to get there today.” Boehner added, however, that lawmakers have “no choice” but to work together and would have to find “a middle ground to bring enough votes to avert a crisis.”

So let me get this straight - House Republicans who were willing to vote for the bill decided against it because the partisan speaker of the house acted in her usual partisan fashion?

I'll stipulate that it was wrong and stupid for Pelosi to give that speech. Her leadership is atrocious and her political instincts were completely wrong.

That having been said...grow up! If this really is the crisis that you and the Democrats and the entire political class is telling us it is, then your actions today displayed not only an alarming lack of seriousness, but an almost inconceivable petulance.

What will be the result? Well, maybe a worse bill. Many of the 95 Dems who voted against this thing did so because they were likely irritated at the fact ACORN funding was removed. Pelosi is going to work overtime to get those folks back on board, and ACORN is likely to be the winner.

Today, the market posted its largest one-day point loss - 777 points down in response to this bill's failure. There’s now nothing stopping Pelosi from inserting the ACORN funding back in to get her caucus in line, putting the bill to a vote and stabilizing the market free-fall as a result of the bill’s passage.

If Pelosi can offer enough goodies to the Blue Dogs and rally enough liberals to vote for an ACORN-friendly version of the bill, she stands a good chance of cobbling together a majority. If that happens, the advertisements write themselves: GOP whined about a single speech and held their votes and markets tanked. Democrats passed bill and markets recovered.

That's a pretty easy message to communicate, and one that doesn't reflect well on the GOP.
