All Fun and Games Until the Hack Goes Too Far

This was probably a better idea in concept than reality.

(CNN) — John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.

Michelle Malkin has a post written by the hacker in question, who now seems to regret his decision to hack into the account of a Secret Service protectee. Canadian Guy thinks he might have an idea who this guy is.

Also, has Gawker ever really had a "finest hour?" I think they lost any shred of credibility when they published a photoshopped photo of Michelle Malkin.

What's interesting is that the hacker in question says he didn't find anything at all incriminating in the emails, which should end the stupid speculation in the media over what Palin was trying to hide. It won't, of course. The media is far too invested in tossing mud and hoping something, anything will stick.

You've got to wonder what this guy was thinking, though. I haven't had a lot of contact with the Secret Service, but I've seen enough of them to know they aren't the type of guys I'd want to have irritated at me. What a silly way to ruin your life. And for what?

Biggest loser? Yahoo and other web-based email programs.

What do you bet there's been a "surge" of people revising their passwords and security questions across the internet?

Do I sound like I'm sneering at the people who now finally realize their security precautions have been too casual? Nope, I'm one of them.
