To Kids, Parents are an Enemy Combatant
And thus unworthy of Geneva Convention treatment.
But first, I'd like to report a crime. It turns out that the Geneva Convention prohibits the use of sleep depravation as a form of torture.I feel his pain. That being the case, my daughter, Samantha Josephine, age two, is in violation of the Geneva Convention.
For the past two years, when it is bed time, we have placed her in her crib, read her a book, said goodnight and enjoyed the silence until morning. The other night, however, my wife and I were just sitting down on the couch to enjoy some decompression after the kids went to bed when from upstairs we heard a thump and little feet banging around. (Side note, how do people who are so small make so much more noise with their little tiny feet than great big grownups do?).
A moment later, Sami-Jo presented herself in the living room. We said, "You should be in bed." She responded, "I can get out of my bed." The idea that we are authority figures in her life has not really taken hold at this point.
Before becoming a parent, I was under the mistaken impression that sleep was a biological imperative for humans. Far too many sleepless nights have disabused me of that notion. Neither of my daughters is fond of Mr. Sandman. I guess that's a good thing - their refusal to sleep gives me more time to read and spend time on the internet.
