Ah, the Joys of Maine

Just got my property tax bill. Even after the so-called "homestead exemption" is figured in, the taxes went up. And 45% of that money is going to fund a school system I have no intention of using. The city's assessor still seems to think that real estate is in a bubble, if his or her judgment of my property's value is any evidence.

Basically...another tax bill, another Baldacci failure. In that bio, the governor brags about his willingness to "listen" to the citizens he represents.

With all due respect, governor...you might want to listen a bit harder. So far, your record on "property tax relief" isn't all that impressive.

Unfortunately, that's been the pattern all over the country. The housing bust means cities are taking in less money, so a lot of cities are artificially jacking up the value of homes to keep the cash flowing.

It's shady and wrong, but a lot of people would rather just sit back than fight it.
