Mainers Shocked, Shocked at State Gas Taxes
Without state and federal taxes, gas would only cost $3.58 a gallon.
With gas prices climbing dramatically over the last year, few people likely noticed the eight-tenths-of-a-cent increase in the cost of a gallon of unleaded gasoline that took effect July 1.What should concern Mainers is that in this time of high fuel prices, some lawmakers are still willing to defend and vote to maintain an automatic increase in taxes each year. Some addictions are just too strong. After all, the average statewide price of a gallon of regular has jumped $1.11 since last year.
But the increase wasn't directly due to global demand, instability in the Middle East or any of the other economic factors normally associated with a spike. It was an automatic increase in Maine's fuel tax, which now stands at 28.4 cents a gallon.
The Maine GOP's inability to point out the wastefulness of the tax and spend mentality of the state's Democrat leaders is...well...par for the course for the Republicans, actually. Why fight when you can sit silently on the sidelines and wonder why you're not winning?

The state tax on cigarettes seems to be as bloodthirsty, yes its an awful addiction, but it is an addiction. Those that aren't willing to quit have to pay, it's their fault after all. right? They shouldn't have gotten themselves addicted.
It seems the state is a better funded (and legal) drug dealer.
Oh, it gets worse, when it comes to gas, they know they can tax it and no matter if we complain, we can't help but comply. Most of us can't walk to our jobs.
Easy money, and an easy fix for those complacent gasbags to fund their latest 'fix' for the economy, education, roadwork, shrubbery .. who knows?
and I wonder why I'm so cynical.

Lemme do the math here. On my truck I have 2 twenty gallon tanks. For simplicity's sake I'll use $4 a gallon as the baseline gas price. 40 gals.(both tanks) times $4/gal equals $160. OUCH! But wait there's more! Now let's add the new and improved(tm) 8/10 cent per gallon state tax. 40 gals. times 8/10 cent equals $32 more! $192 to fill up. I guess I'll have to become a Male Stripper or a crack dealer to keep up with the Garcias. Or I could defect to New Hampshire. Or something.

I think its totally insane that the state of Maine taxes the dog out of the citizens here and the cost of living keeps getting higher and higher but people's income is below average. Exactly what does this state's capital think its going to do?
I am from downeast Maine (Eastport to be exact) and most people there stay with dead end jobs just to say they have one. That is even if they are lucky enough to have a job most are on welfare or other social programs because the economy is terrible there. That is one of the reasons I moved from my family but I cant say its any better. Sure you can get a job for 9 bucks an hour where I live but its retail and you only wind up working 30 hours a week if your lucky. When you have children and a family to support when Baldacci gets his money from you you are left with 150 bucks to feed your kids and family on. Now we are going to add gas to everyone's problems ? Good move, just the other day I seen our wonderful governor driving a gov. hummer. No wonder we have to pay out our asses on gas taxes so we can fill the governor's gas tank. Smart move Baldi got any other tricks up your sleeve?

Maine GOP is very representative of the RINO Party's present standing(or bending mover and grabbing the ankles)nation-wide, and it must be that they have seen how well their approach has worked in Californication and Michi-gander Land.
