Favor Not Returned

Ah...remember the 2004 election, when John McCain went out of his way to defend John Kerry against the "swiftboaters?" I'm sure Kerry appreciated it. Really, though, did you expect him to return the favor?

Senator John F. Kerry said yesterday that John McCain doesn't have the judgment to be president.

If that is the case, then it's probably a good thing McCain rejected overtures from Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004, to form a bipartisan ticket and run with Kerry as his candidate for vice president.

The Massachusetts senator, who supports Barack Obama, had no kind words for his Senate colleague yesterday, accusing McCain of poor decision-making on everything from backing tax cuts for the wealthy to making support for continuing the US military presence in Iraq the centerpiece of his presidential campaign.

McCain's defense of Kerry gave the Democrats and the media a wonderful talking point against the credible charges made by the Swift Boat Veterans. Given the chance to return the kindness, Kerry stabbed his old friend and former defender in the back.

I hope Kerry's ungracious behavior makes the Maverick™ realize the futility of reaching across the aisle. As with any story that would require McCain to change, however, I'm not optimistic.

John Kerry defended John McCain for YEARS during the POW/MIA investigations, and got all of the Vietnam vets in the Senate to sign a letter defending his honor during the 2000 primary when Bush smeared him. And I am sorry, but McCain's defense of JK in '04 was the LEAST he could do in return, not to mention that he asked Kerry to pull an ad with McCain in it, and nevertheless spoke at a convention where delegates were sporting purple heart band aids to mock Kerry's service. Sorry, Kerry doesn't owe McCain a damned thing.

While it may be true that Kerry doesn't 'owe' McCain anything, one would hope an honorable man would not attack the man who had helped him in the past. Kerry has taken the offensive here - something McCain did not do and has not done against the Massachusetts Democrat.

I'm no fan of John McCain, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let a dishonorable dirtbag like John Kerry off the hook for his behavior.
