The Lying Coalition

Today, I received a nice glossy publication in the mail encouraging me to say 'no thanks' to the people's veto effort against the new beverage tax. Here's what the over-sized postcard said:

Bill is the owner of a small business in Richmond. If the "beverage petition" to veto health coverage is successful, Bill and five employees are directly at risk of losing their health insurance, while Hope and the Keleher children could see their coverage become unaffordable.

If you're asked to sign the "beverage petition" please say:

No, thanks, to putting the Kelehers of Topsham and 18,000 other Maine kids, adults and small business people in jeopardy of losing their health insurance.

No, thanks, to the veto of health coverage for Maine.

This is, of course, unmitigated bullpuckey. The people's veto would simply remove the new revenue stream for Dirigo. It would not veto the failure of a health insurance program. These groups are lying:

Engage Maine
Maine Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse
Maine Center for Economic Policy
Maine Equal Justice
Maine Medical Association
Maine People’s Alliance
Maine People’s Resource Center
The League of Young Voters

Allow me to repeat: these groups are lying about the people's veto. No one's health insurance will be taken away - those of us who will sign, and vote, for such a veto simply want to let the governor know that we're not impressed with his broken promises on taxes and that he should look elsewhere for revenue to support his failing program.

Why are the groups listed above so afraid of engaging in an honest debate?
