Sign the Petition
Rep. Mike Thibodeau lays out the case for the people's veto of the governor's Dirigo tax. He reminds us of the most infuriating aspect of this tax:
My guess is that if the veto initiative makes it to the ballot, the people will pass it handily, because they really are fed up with Maine’s ruinous taxation. They are not likely to be happy about the way this tax came into being, either. The majority party sprang it as a surprise on April 15, and that night, under the cover of darkness, they jammed it through the House and Senate on party line votes. The 'under cover of darkness' language may seem hyperbolic, but it's true - the Democrats held this vote at night, with no public input. The Democrats did all this with complete disregard for legislative protocol. There was no public hearing or public input of any kind. This was a brazen, in-your-face maneuver that set a new low for arrogance by a party that has been in control of Augusta for far too long.
In the column, Thibodeau warns against the scare tactics that will be used by groups in favor of this tax. As I've discovered, those groups will lie to keep this tax in place. Their lies will only grow more blatant and fantastic as the petitions gather more signatures.
Maine taxpayers have already paid $100 million into this boondoggle of a project, and now the governor is asking for more. I hope Mainers are smart enough to tell him that we're not interested in funding a program that benefits his legacy more than the people of Maine.
