Breaktime Over
I'll admit. I didn't intend to take this much time off from the blog. Just happened. I've actually been home a couple of days, but just didn't spend much time on the computer.
Washington was great. The conference was more interesting than I had anticipated, which was a pleasant surprise. In addition, the travel gave us some nice family time - my daughter loved the National Zoo and visiting relatives. And to top things off, I ate more crab cakes in a week than I'd eaten in the past few years.
However, I did learn that it's best to avoid restaurants that put no prices on their outside menu.
My co-worker and I wanted to get a steak the first night of the conference. We went to Morton's Steakhouse in the Crystal City shops. Looked like a nice place - we sat down, each ordered a beer and were given free, warm bread. Then we got the menu. The cheapest steak on the menu was $36. And that was just for the steak - sides were extra.
Sure, the conference was providing a per diem and I have nothing against paying for a nice meal but...yikes. I was at a work conference, not a nice evening out. We quickly decided to pay for the beer and leave. The bill for the beer? $7 each - for a 12 ounce bottle. At that point, we started wolfing down the free bread...might as well get our money's worth after all.
That has got to be either the best steak ever, or proof positive of this thesis.
