Maine Leads the Way
My state leads the nation.
In, er, banning 'novelty lighters.
AUGUSTA – Governor John E. Baldacci signed LD 2081 into law today, An Act to Prohibit the Retail Sale and Distribution of Novelty Lighters.Good to see the legislature focused on the important issues of the day. This ends my dream of owning one of those little musket lighters.“Many novelty lighters resemble toys,” Governor Baldacci said. “With statistics that show that more than 5,000 household fires are caused each year by children under the age of 5, anything we can do to prevent children from playing with lighters will serve to save lives and homes.”
Curse you, governor!

When novelty lighters are criminalized, only criminals will have novelty lighters!

Wow, were you fortunate enough to borrow California's legislators for a while?
How lucky for you.
Now you can be as happy and content as we all are.

Not to worry Sublog - this law only regulates the "Assault" type lighters and any and all with a lug for a bayonette. Also, they may not be refillable 10 or more times. I think one of the other provisions states that you may not legally posess one within 500 feet of any school, or state building. It should keep us all very safe now. And just imagine all that extra income the children will have saved and now be able to inject it back into the economy! O did I mention -that matches are free?

Bummer-just got my concealed carry license on these. Who will save me from these rampant 5 year old arsonists now?
