Is it Something in the Water?

New York's new governor admits to an affair.

The thunderous applause was still ringing in his ears when the state's new governor, David Paterson, told the Daily News that he and his wife had extramarital affairs.

In a stunning revelation, both Paterson, 53, and his wife, Michelle, 46, acknowledged in a joint interview they each had intimate relationships with others during a rocky period in their marriage several years ago.

In the course of several interviews in the past few days, Paterson said he maintained a relationship for two or three years with "a woman other than my wife," beginning in 1999.

Okay, so the affair happened years ago, and the marriage seems to be solid now...but still. What on earth is wrong with politicians? Is it really that hard to stay faithful to your spouse?

I do kind of feel bad for the Patersons on this one, though. They seem to have benefited from counseling, and made the choice to stick together. I listened to part of the new governor's speech this afternoon, and his desire for a new sort of NY politics looks genuine. Hope this doesn't derail the state too much.
