State of the Union - Catch the Fever!
Bleh. I hate State of the Union speeches. Most of them turn into 'how can I spend your money' fests.
I may live-blog it, unless I decide to do something more fun, like watch the weather channel or pick aimlessly at the loose strings on my couch.
The Live Blog - It's his last SoTU. Might as well watch. I'm watching on C-SPAN, though. I like my politics pure.
I love watching the most liberal members of Congress line up along the aisle where the president enters just to get some face time. Um, now that I think about it, it's kind of sad that I know who the most liberal members of Congress are by sight. *sigh*
9:08 - Now, the speech. I've got a Newcastle and a laptop. I'm ready.
9:11 - The first call for bipartisanship. I don't think I've ever seen insincere cheering before.
9:14 - "The IRS accepts both checks and money orders." Heh.
Everything else? Below the fold, so to speak.
9:17 - Finally, he takes on earmarks. Sure, it only took seven years, but hey...
9:20 - Okay, I admit...I kind of zoned out during the health care part.
9:22 - And now he's defending No Child Left Behind. Blech.
9:24 - Oh no! I think Charlie Rangel is dead! Oh, wait...he frowned. Sorry, false alarm. Guy doesn't even blink, though. Creepy.
9:27 - Nancy Pelosi is leaning awfully close to Dick Cheney. That guy must have some serious animal magnetism. Yes, these are the things I notice when bored by the speech.
9:30 - Judges. Thanks for the Gang of 14, Senator McCain!
9:33 - Yay entitlements! Keep spending my money!
9:40 - Foreign policy and the war on terror is the president's stronger suit, but I'm still kind of bored and find myself staring longingly at the Dresden Files book next to me on the couch. It's calling me...
9:44 - I think the surge is working, but I really wish he'd stop using the term "on the run." Still, the fact that the Democrats are sitting and not applauding at news of progress in Iraq is kind of irritating.
9:51 - Palestinian state. Sure, it'll happen...when the Palestinians decide that killing Jews is a bad thing.
9:53 - I love how the Supreme Court never claps. Ever.
9:57 - So...has the president said what the state of the union is yet? Because he's talking a lot about spending my money.
10:02 - Ah, the "state of our union will remain strong." Saved it for the end of the speech.
Overall, meh. But then, so are most State of the Union addresses. At least the president kept this short, and wasn't obsessed with his 'legacy.'
Just switched over to NBC. Listened to it long enough to remember why I hate network news. David Gregory seems to believe he's a mind reader.
They did just report that Pelosi's response to Bush's disappointment on the failure of immigration reform and other issues was "poor baby." Harry Reid called him "bankrupt of ideas." The great thing about Democrats? Their class.
The Democratic Response - I can't take any more speechifying tonight, thanks. Especially since the woman chosen for the honor is kind of a moron.
