Mitt's Bad Morning

Mitt Romney was on "Meet the Press" this morning. He didn't help himself much.

First, Tim Russert asked him about the Mormon church's refusal to allow African-Americans into the priesthood before 1978. It was a softball, and Romney whiffed it. Sure, he cried, but those tears don't disguise the fact that he didn't criticize a doctrinal stance of his church that should have been a gimme.

If that weren't bad enough, Romney then decided to irritate a constituency that's already suspicious of him - gun owners, by saying he would have signed the Assault Weapons Ban and then uttering the phrase "weapons of unusual lethality" to describe the types of weapons he'd be willing to limit.

All in all, not his strongest performance.
