Mike Huckabee says Republicans should spend time, money and effort on something that will never, ever pass. Huckabee, allegedly a conservative candidate, decries federalism in the clip.
“It’s the logic of the Civil War,” Huckabee said Sunday, comparing abortion rights to slavery. “If morality is the point here, and if it’s right or wrong, not just a political question, then you can’t have 50 different versions of what’s right and what’s wrong.”Has this guy ever actually read the Constitution? Unfortunately for Huckabee, our government is not run by a philosophy based on personal morality. It's a government of laws, not men. Hey Huck, people you disagree with have their own sense of morality...do you want to run the government based on their views?“For those of us for whom this is a moral question, you can’t simply have 50 different versions of what’s right,” he said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”
I believe abortion is wrong. In fact, I think it's evil. But it's gone far beyond being a moral issue - it's now a political one, and thanks to stare decisis, a Constitutional one. Huckabee is making the wrong arguments and suggesting the wrong strategy. A "Human Rights Amendment" would have to pass with 2/3 majorities in each of the houses of Congress, and would then have to get the approval of 38 states.
Right now, the best hope for conservatives is to overturn Roe v Wade and turn the decision back to the states. Some states will outlaw abortion, others will not. But it would end in at least half the states, which would be a victory. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a workable one that would save lives.
Huckabee doubtless knows this, and panders anyway. I can only hope that social conservatives in Iowa do not allow their ears to be so easily tickled.
