Here Come the Reality Shows

If these talks don't work, get ready for the reality show invasion.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Last-minute talks were under way Sunday to avert a strike by Hollywood screen writers demanding a share of the cash film and television studios bring in from DVDs and online distribution of shows.

If the 12,000 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) walk out Monday as threatened, it is likely to cause popular shows to be yanked off air and throw the US film and television industry into crisis.

"If anything is going to come out of this it is going to take a long time," WGA spokeswoman Sherry Goldman told AFP after talks began at an undisclosed location in Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

"The biggest sticking point is new media, new technology. Our mantra is, 'if they get paid, we get paid'."

I'm not a union guy, but they have a point. If studios are making money from a product that a writer created, that writer should get part of the profits. That doesn't seem like a hard concept, but according to one comedy writer, studios are willing to go to war over this. It seems beyond obvious to say this, but without good writers, you wouldn't have good television. Actors get all the attention and a ton of money, but they wouldn't have anything to say if it weren't for the neurotic folks who toil away in front of computers.

The worst part about this is that thanks to the stubbornness of studio heads, we're going to be subjected to game shows, reality television and reruns when the studios run out of scripts or pre-taped shows.

Hey, who's up for "Kid Nation, Part II: The Search for Piggy?"

Comments

No comments on the Paul post? What a brilliant decision, considering how obnoxious and profane we Ron Paul supporters can be! Honestly, you should be made king of the world for that one.

Note (Slublog): Petit didn't actually say that. He chose to insult with copious profanity. To quote "Lonesome Dove," I hate rude behavior in a man. Thank you, Petit, for showing why I didn't allow comments on that post - I will not have this site turned into a forum for you lunatics. Get your own bandwidth.

I don't make it a habit to edit comments, but Petit's little tirade was disgusting enough to make me change that practice just for him.
