More Tales of the Post-Service Economy
On the way to Greenville, we stopped by a McDonald's for breakfast. I ordered a Sausage McMuffin value meal, a Sausage, Egg and Biscuit value meal and an extra hashbrown.
I received a Sausage McMuffin value meal, an Egg McMuffin value meal and no hashbrown. After parking my car and entering the restaurant, I waited a few minutes (multiple customers - one cashier) and received nothing more than a sullen, rote apology from the person who took the time to complete the order I placed.
I've worked the drive-through at McDonald's, on both the order-taking and order-filling ends. I hated the job, but know that it's really not that hard to put the right food in the right bag - if this were an isolated occurrence, it would not be troubling. But unfortunately, this has happened a number of times in various restaurants.
And it's not confined to McDonald's. More and more, when I'm shopping at stores or eating at restaurants, I've noticed a considerable deterioration in the quality of service provided. I'm not a picky customer, but I do think that if I'm putting green pieces of paper in your company's cash register, I should at minimum receive more than half-hearted service - I'm looking at you, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Shaw's Supermarkets. I don't care about the superficial smile or the pleasant demeanor - all I ask is that I be given the food I paid for, that someone who works in a particular department know something about that department or that an adequate number of cash registers be open to handle demand.
This problem seems confined to huge national corporations. I've received excellent service at the Leisure Life Resort in Greenville, the Coffee Pot or the local Aubuchon Hardware.
What has happened to the work ethic in this country? I don't believe the maxim that the customer is always right. Still, is it too much to ask that we at least not be treated like trespassers in the place you're paid to help us?

I have always believed that when The Economy does well, service at McD's goes even lower than usual, due to the fact McD's has to reach deeper into the employment pool to find people not working at highre paying jobs.

You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have managed to express the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through.

Great post! I?m just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well - resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our company is based in the US, it?s all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is useful in that case
