WASHINGTON (CNN) — Trying to be a "friend" to the American people, Democratic White House hopeful Mike Gravel gave his honest assessment to potential voters during an online Democratic candidate forum Thursday.Well, he's right about the first. Our obesity rates are alarming. As for the second, I'd agree that our popular culture and discourse is growing more coarse and less enlightening. Overall, though, kudos to Gravel for having the courage to be entertaining and really, really weird on the campaign trail."I'm prepared to tell you that Americans are getting fatter and dumber," the former Alaska senator told comedian Bill Maher, one of the debate's moderators. "I have no problem saying that."
