Garry Kasparov is challenging the Kremlin.
MOSCOW (AFP) — Chess great Garry Kasparov was named Sunday as the Other Russia opposition coalition's candidate for 2008 presidential polls, and vowed to fight for democracy against the Kremlin's political juggernaut.Kasparov doesn't have a chance, frankly. Putin has spent the last few years shutting down critical press and consolidating power, so it's safe to say he's probably got this election wired.Kasparov overwhelmingly won a party congress vote against five other contenders to run in the March 2, 2008, election to replace President Vladimir Putin.
"I will do everything possible for the ideas of Other Russia to win. This will work only if we stay united," he told the meeting, adding the coalition stood for a "democratic and just Russia."
Still, it would be nice to see the Russian people arise and stop the country's slide into Soviet-style strongman rule.
Completely unrelated, but old and fun - A Finnish rock band and the Russian Red Army Choir sing Skynard, proving once and for all who won the Cold War.
