A Question of Residency

"I live here...once a week!"

Cressey, whose district includes the southern Maine towns of Baldwin, Cornish, Denmark, Limington and Sebago, said Friday he is serving as an interim pastor at the First Baptist Church in Rowley, Mass., where he hopes to get a full-time job. He said his family spends several days a week there and he and his wife have enrolled their children in public schools there.

But Cressey insisted he still lives in House District 99 because he and his wife return to their rented house in Cornish or to his parents' house in Limington at least once a week, their car is registered in Maine, they pay taxes in Maine and he retains a Maine driver's license.

He said his constituents can reach him by e-mail or leave a telephone message for him in Cornish if they need him.

You know, he could have gotten away with this - if he had moved anywhere but Massachusetts. Some things just cannot be forgiven.

Seriously, though - I think the guy should resign. If not, it sets a poor precedent - a lot of people from other states have summer residences in Maine. In a sense, they live here every weekend and pay taxes. Should we let them run for the legislature as well?

I would hope not.

Sorry, Cressey - but it's time to admit you've moved to the dark side and gone Mass on us. You've got to give up the seat.
