What if You Threw a Strike and No One Came?
The lobsterman's strike is ongoing, but not everyone is on board, so to speak.
PHIPPSBURG-- On a normal weekday, Brett Gilliam and the more than a dozen other lobstermen who call Small Point Harbor their home port are out on the water hauling their catch.I feel for these guys, but like some of the commenters to the story are saying, I didn't hear them complaining about unstable prices when lobster was fetching $10 a pound. The irony is that if enough of them strike for too long, it could give the lobster population some time to grow. If they think prices are bad now, wait until a lobster baby boom floods the market with the ugly little sea bugs.Thursday, they stood on the dock not doing much and vowing to go nowhere until lobster prices go up.
"We would probably be smart to just get out of it altogether," said Gilliam, a fifth-generation lobsterman.
Gilliam and his fellow Small Point Harbor lobstermen are among of a growing number of fishermen protesting a recent drop in wholesale prices for lobster.
Nobody knows exactly how many of Maine's 5,800 lobstermen remained in port this week to protest the going price of $3.75 a pound. In Gouldsboro and Cutler, 100 boats tied up Monday, according to The Associated Press. Other reports had lobstermen protesting in Cundys Harbor and Harpswell.
But the protest will probably have little or no impact on the price and availability of lobster in stores and restaurants anytime soon, those in the industry say.

Ahem - they might be "ugly little sea bugs" but they sure are TASTY, even if they are ugly and the ocean's equivalent to a cockroach. A little melted butter and a beer? YUM!
