Sympathy for the Depressed

Actor Owen Wilson has just revealed that he tried to commit suicide.

Santa Monica police officials went to the home of actor Owen Wilson on Sunday after receiving a call about an "attempted suicide," according to police logs.

The logs, posted on the Santa Monica Police Department website, said the attempted suicide call came in at around noon. The log does not identify Wilson specifically. But Santa Monica Fire Department officials have already confirmed that their paramedics and police officers responded to the actor's house that Sunday.

Wilson's issues have prompted discussion about the nature of depression on Ace's site. Some are sympathetic - others less so. In reading the comments, it's clear that some simply do not understand the nature of depression. Mood is not always dependent upon what you have, or how much you have achieved. Sometimes, none of that matters - the dark clouds descend and there's little you can do about it. I've dealt with depression for years, and have yet to understand why it happens.

I wish Wilson all the best. I've enjoyed his movies and hope he can find his way out of this particular dark cloud.

I had to stop reading the comments over there because I very nearly went something something on several people. My father is bipolar and was undiagnosed for several years. He made three serious suicide attempts in eight months, the last of which required me to take him down with a forearm to the throat so I could then pull the bottle of weed killer out of his mouth.

You can imagine my response to some of the comments over there. Though I do believe at least one person was being a prick just to be a prick. But yes. I lost a lot of respect for certain people.
