Less Talk, More Paving Please

The last word in the headline to this story should be "again."

ORONO - The president and CEO of Cianbro Corp. on Tuesday unveiled a proposal for an east-west toll highway in Maine, his contribution to a series of discussions on how Maine can better align itself with Canada to pursue economic development.

A toll highway from Calais to Coburn Gore is the only solution to the pressing need for a better way to cross the state, Peter G. Vigue said. The highway would significantly reduce travel time, costs and fuel emissions for the 1,000 heavy American and Canadian trucks that travel through Calais daily and are banned from the interstate because of their weight.

"The largest investors in this state in the last 10 years are the Canadians. Let’s accept it, embrace it, understand it. We’re not competitors," Vigue said.

Cianbro's involvement is encouraging, since they tend to actually do what they say they're going to do.

Still, if Vigue can get past the blackfly-like swarms of NIMBY sufferers and environmentalists in the state, I'll be shocked.

Well there's also that kid in Hampden that got killed recently when she turned in front of one of those big trucks that are on the state highways because they are too heavy for the interstate. Now in this instance it was clearly her fault, but maybe she would have survived an impact with a normal passenger vehicle. Surely some of the other such accidents, though, have been the truck driver's fault. Something should be done to keep them on limited access roads.
