FLASH: APPLE FACES A REBELLION OVER ITUNES... Universal Music Group, the world's biggest music corporation, notified Apple that it will not renew its annual contract to sell music through iTunes... Developing...Well then, I hope they enjoy having their music downloaded illegally, because that will be the result of this stupid move.
iTunes is the third largest music retailer in the United States. There's a reason for that - the record industries have been alienating fans not just through their odd business practice of suing customers, but also by allowing artists to release overpriced, sub-par albums.
It costs about $.36 to produce a CD, and the average price is $15. That's about a 3500 percent profit margin. Considering most CDs contain about three good songs out of 15, that's a pretty high price to pay. The beauty of iTunes is that it allows you to download just the songs you want, without the filler.
If this means less money for the record companies, then I have a simple suggestion - stop paying artists so much to record crap. Demand quality, not quantity. Many of us are willing to purchase music, we just don't want to pay for packaging and filler.
And while you're at it, stop suing your customers. In the long run, it won't work. Technological progress cannot be stopped with torts.
