I've Been Searching So Long
Allah bemoans the lack of good candidates on the Republican side and says he's thinking of staying home next November.
I know how he feels. Although I tend to agree more with the Republicans currently running for president than the Democrats, none of the guys with an R after their name really get me excited about what they'd do as president.
Rudy Giuliani - I like this guy. I have ever since I saw him speak in Brewer during the 2004 election. But he's got some issues that I'm just not sure he can overcome in a Republican primary. His social liberalism and his, er, colorful personal life are pretty big hurdles to overcome.
Mitt Romney - Another guy I like. He'd often visit Howie Carr's radio show and was personable, funny and articulate about what he believes. Whatever that is, I mean. I understand the need to get elected, but how exactly does someone go from a social liberal to a social conservative in four years? That's a lot of change in a very short time. I'd vote for him, and think he'd be a good president, but I fear he'd become a George W. Bush type when in office - squishy and overly compromising.
John McCain - His campaign is over, so I won't pile on. Much. Honestly, did this guy really think he could get the nomination?
Fred Thompson - The great unknown. I like the idea of Thompson - a warm and fuzzy, but uncompromising, conservative candidate. He's running a very interesting campaign, and he's a genuinely likable guy, but from what I've seen so far, he's not great on the stump and his record might not match his rhetoric.
Brownback, Gilmore, Huckabee, Hunter, Paul, Tancredo, Tommy Thompson - Oh please. These guys are like the .99 cent DVDs you see in a large bin at Wal-Mart. Sure, the titles and covers seem entertaining, but you'd never actually buy one.
It's too bad a Democrat like Phil Bredesen isn't running for the presidency. A governor who cuts spending, refuses to raise taxes and wins the support of Republicans? Sounds like my kind of guy.

I'm pretty excited about the Republican field. I think any of the top 3 contenders would be an outstanding candidate. To tell you the truth, I'm having a hard time deciding which one I like the most!
Well, Ron Paul pwns all, of course. But besides him!

Well, technically FDT hasn't declared his candidacy, so I don't know that we can judge how he is doing campaigning. He might be acting like a candidate, but until he formally announces...personally I can't wait until he does announce, then we'll see him in full action.
I like the idea of a FDT/Guiliani ticket, in that order. They are a good balance on the issues.

Any favorable thoughts I've had about Mitt have vanished with the near-certainty that he's behind the (lame) hit pieces on Fred.
I dunno how you can take interested Beltway parties' word as gospel that Fred's not a good stump guy.

I'm not taking anyone's word. I watched him on C-SPAN a few times and wasn't that impressed.
