BIA Folds, Sort Of
BANGOR - Airport officials and four representatives of the Maine Troop Greeters struck a deal Friday morning and created a list of approved treats the volunteers can give to troops who pass through Bangor International Airport on their departure or return from overseas."Overreacted?" You think?The drafted list allows troop greeters to distribute individually wrapped hard candies and bite-size candy bars, as well as commercially prepared cookies, according to Bangor International Airport Director Rebecca Hupp.
"We think we could have overreacted when we banned all food items," Hupp said Friday. "When we met with the troop greeters we came to a very reasonable and agreeable resolution."
Translation: We're tired of all the bad press.
It's not a total victory for the food greeters, but it does allow them to hand out some goodies to the troops coming home from war. Nothing homemade, but still a taste of home.
I was talking about this story with my dad, and he made a good point - the troop planes have given BIA a serious influx of cash, both in landing fees and in the purchases made by troops who are on U.S. soil for the first time. The vendors were probably doing big business regardless of the free food given out by the greeters. Sure, a free cookie is great, but how many guys took the opportunity to get a burger, slice of pizza or beer? Quite a few, I'm sure.
Still, it's good to see BIA acknowledge their error, and make some attempt at correcting it.
