"The Case for the Empire"

On this, the anniversary of Geek, I point you to an article of near-heresy.

Was The Empire good?

Leia's lies are perfectly defensible--she thinks she's serving the greater good--but they make her wholly unreliable on the question of whether or not Alderaan really is peaceful and defenseless. If anything, since Leia is a high-ranking member of the rebellion and the princess of Alderaan, it would be reasonable to suspect that Alderaan is a front for Rebel activity or at least home to many more spies and insurgents like Leia.

Whatever the case, the important thing to recognize is that the Empire is not committing random acts of terror. It is engaged in a fight for the survival of its regime against a violent group of rebels who are committed to its destruction.

You know, the guy may have a point.

Well . . . except we know from the prequels that the Empire was birthed in a flurry of deceipt, corruption, and violence.

The author does make some good points. But then, sometimes flawed heroes make for better story telling than 2-dimensional "good guys" and "bad guys."

So, Pete, you can justify killing every man, woman, child and alien on a planet on the basis that one individual who happens to be you enemy comes from that region? Not only that, but she happens to be Darth Vader's daughter and she was probably conceived on the city planet or Naboo. You might as well blow up Naboo and Tantooine while you're at it as they are the areas of her family heritage. That make no strategic sense. The Empire was randomly, arbitrarily evil. It blew up a planet just to show it could. That would be like if we blew up Korea with the atom bomb in WWII just to show Japan we had the power to hit them next. Think of the younglings, Pete! Think of the younglings! The more interesting question is, could Vader really find redemption so close to death after a life of murder?

Hahahaha!

Nah, I was kidding. I'm just so bitter about what Lucas did to the franchise that I didn't find myself all that excited about geeking out over the anniversary.

What bugged me about the prequels was that in the original trilogy, Vader enjoyed being a villian. Obi Wan said he was seduced by the dark side. But in the prequels, Lucas throws all of that out and shows a naive boy tricked into accepting the dark side.

Vader was evil. And he liked it.

The prequels just throw all that away in favor of dealing with Anakin's mommy issues.
