Falwell's Death

This is kind of an obligatory 'it's in the news' post, because I really don't have much to say about Jerry Falwell. Both of my readers know I'm not a fan of his entries into politics, but no one deserves the level of vitriol his death has unleashed.

Overall, I think the internet is a wonderful thing, but unfortunately the anonymity available coarsens the public discourse. Still, that's no excuse for celebrating the death of a fellow human being.

What?! There's . . . there's someone else?!

I feel betrayed.

In all seriousness, I'm not entirely certain what to say about Falwell's death. By the time I began tuning into politics, he was more of a 3rd string extra on the political stage (something akin to Al Franken on SNL). At this point, the only thing I can remember out of him was calling the pink Teletubby gay.

I'm sure he contributed something in the last 10 years, but I couldn't tell you what.

I wouldn't wish ill on anyone, no matter what I thought of them. I'm not glad he's dead, but honestly I'm not sorry either. He was always on the fringe it's true - but he made enough noise to be like a pebble in your shoe.

And the comments he made after 9/11 were heinous - don't particularly care that he apologized for them. He said them, period.

How about: farewell, Falwell. R.I.P.
