Bush to Base: Drop Dead - UPDATED

On the bright side, the president is finally answering his critics.

GLYNCO, Ga., May 29 — President Bush today accused opponents of his proposed immigration measure of fear-mongering to defeat it in Congress, and took on his own conservative political base as he did so.

“If you want to scare the American people, what you say is the bill’s an amnesty bill,” Mr. Bush said this afternoon at a training center for border enforcement agents located in this town in Georgia’s southeastern corner. “That’s empty political rhetoric, trying to frighten our citizens.”

The immigration debate - bringing America together.

UPDATE - Could the House kill the bill? (H/t: Allah)

ANOTHER UPDATE - Geoff writes that his support for Bush has dissipated completely thanks to the president's comments.

Yeah, I'm there myself, and it's a pretty hard place to be.

Some background: I have supported the president since before the New Hampshire primary in 2000. The weekend before the votes were cast in New Hampshire, a friend and I drove out to help in any way we could. We ended up spending the day in the bitter cold, passing out campaign literature and taking abuse from McCain supporters. Later we worked the phones and took yet more abuse from McCain supporters.

Just after McCain dropped out of the race, Bush visited Maine. The night before he arrived, I helped set up the auditorium and for my troubles, got to stand on stage with the future president of the United States. It was a heck of a moment and I was full of optimism for his campaign and was sure he was going to be elected president.

After the ugliness of Florida, he was and it was an exciting thing. His first few months weren't the best, but after the attacks of September 11 and his response to them, it seemed as though his presidency had found its footing.

Then the Iraq war began and things got hard again. John Kerry picked up steam running against the war and presented quite a challenge to the president. During that election, I donated money, worked phone banks and replaced my lawn sign at least three times. I blogged up a storm on why Bush was preferable to Kerry.

I've given money and considerable time to support the president and this is the thanks I get?

I hope it was worth it, Mr. President.

I'm done.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE - Dave in Texas and Ace are just as irritated, and call it quits with the president.

Sounds like a pretty good bumper sticker to me.

He'll never work in that town again.

Yup, going to go next to my "Don't blame me, I don't eat at Baldacci's" and next to my "Borders, now only a bookstore" sticker...

Good blog you have, Slu. I'm with you on this. I've taken enough crap for supporting him over the years, and I'm done as well. Let the Left have at him because I'm not saying a word in his defense.
