Blink

The Legislature does the right thing.

AUGUSTA (NEWS CENTER) - The State Appropriations Committee says it has withdrawn it's proposals to increase the tax on Penn National to help close the state budget.

Representative Emily Cain of Orono said the appropriations committee didn't want people to be out of work any longer, so they pulled their proposals with hopes Penn National's $130 million project in Bangor would resume.

Nice spin, but it's clear the vehement bi-partisan criticism of the proposal took the Appropriations Committee completely by surprise. They thought it would be non-controversial to "soak" a rich company, and didn't realize that their attempts to do so would be seen as a blow to Maine's economic development efforts.
