Take the Money and Run
Late last month, the State Revenue Forecasting Committee said this year's revenue will be about $34 million less than expected, meaning the state will need to cut the budget.
Questions are being asked as to whether Governor John Baldacci's plan to consolidate schools in Maine will actually do any good. Of course, we may never know because the K-12 lobby has come out in force against any attempt at reform.
The budget situation in Maine doesn't look great, but our legislators have a plan.
Tuttle said his pay proposal, $15,750 for the first year of the two-year term and $11,250 for the second year, is based on a 1999 recommendation from the State Compensation Commission.Great timing, guys.Lawmakers now are paid $12,615 in the first year of the biennium and $9,254 in the second year. They also get up to $70 a day for meals, lodging and mileage and $100 a day for special sessions. Lawmakers get the same benefit package as state workers, with health and dental insurance fully paid by the state.
Way to take one for the team.
