One Storm Fades, Another Builds

The Nor'Easter that hit Maine yesterday did little to my city, but really wreaked havoc on southern Maine. On any other day, the incredible damage caused by that mini-hurricane would be the top story here.

Unfortunately, though, a troubled "loner" named Cho Seung Hui grabbed the headlines in an act of pure evil.

There's little I can say to add to the already-excellent coverage of the Virginia Tech massacre by Hot Air, Instapundit and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Whenever something this terrible happens, we always see stories of bravery in the midst of evil. I encourage you to read this one, about Professor Liviu Librescu, a Holocaust survivor who threw himself in front of the gunman in an attempt to save his students.

The debate will doubtless center on the usual political footballs tossed around at times like this - gun control, media violence, video games. There will be screaming matches on television between those of opposite views - politicians and the media will once again create their sound and fury.

But I encourage you to take a moment to remember the victims, honor the bravery and pray for a community that needs some comfort.

I should add that I do have some opinions on the university's response, but am going to hold off on posting them until I can really think them through.

Librescu was a hero. Why were there so few willing to sacrifice themselves to protect others?
