Geeks Unite to Support "Firefly"
Serenity beats Star Wars for favorite geek film.
Space thriller Serenity has beaten Star Wars to the title of best sci-fi movie in an SFX magazine poll of 3,000 fans.I thought Serenity was a good film - not as good on the short-lived series upon which it was based, but good. The futuristic release from 2005 was based on the short-lived TV series Firefly. Both were the work of Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon.
Star Wars - which Whedon has conceded had "an enormous influence" on Serenity - came second in the survey.
I think these survey results have a lot more to do with George Lucas than about the quality of his films. The original Star Wars trilogy was great, but the prequels were disappointing, and Lucas' fan-hate has been obvious.
The lesson here? Don't piss geeks off. They will take you down.

Props to Harrison Ford, though: he appeared in #2 and #3, and managed to avoid being typecast for the rest of his career.
I think the votes for Firefly are artifacts of poor memory and/or the youth of the voters. The Matrix is the only other recent film. Living through the hype of a release will warp your perspective, as will being a fan of the TV show (no other film had that advantage). From what I've heard, Star Wars' coolness when it was released totally blows away anything the Firefly movie or show ever had. But what would I know: I was in 1st grade, saw SW in its original release and fell asleep in the theater. Ack!

Not. A. Chance. The ORIGINAL Star Wars is by far the most imaginative, jaw dropping (for its time) sci-fi movie ever produced. I was 14 when SW first came out and that summer I saw it in the theater nearly 15 times with my best friend back then. And I watch it at least on an annual basis - sometimes doing a marathon of the original 3. The "prequels" were disappointing to say the least, but I don't hold that against Lucas.
The man who created Star Wars and American Graffiti gets my vote every time.

Oh...do you really want to admit that in public? :-)

It was the late show. I'm positive of it.

We should all be "taken down" the way Lucas has been. :P
