Enough of the Imus

Drudge has had Imus-related stories at the top of the page all day.

So has CNN. And while I don't condone what Imus said, this sounds suspiciously like whining:

Other players echoed Carson's reaction, saying Imus' insulting words and the resulting controversy overshadowed their achievements.

"Our moment was taken away -- our moment to celebrate our success, our moment to realize how far we had come, both on and off the court, as young women," said sophomore forward Heather Zurich. "We were stripped of this moment by degrading comments made by Mr. Imus last Wednesday. What hurts the most about this situation is that Mr. Imus knows not one of us personally."

I don't regularly listen to Imus because he often annoys me - one can only hear about his ranch and his disagreement with the Iraq war for so long. But I'm tired of this being such a HUGE STORY. Ladies, your moment wasn't taken away. Imus did not remove your accomplishments. His words only have power if you let them get in the way of taking pride in what you've done.

Imus said something stupid, and apologized. Why on earth do we need to keep hearing about it, and why has it become such a big deal?

I'm getting a real August 2001, Chandra Levy Summer of the Shark vibe from the media these days. I just have the feeling that something big and terrible is going to happen, and we're ignoring it in favor of watching Don Imus get raked over the coals, or obsessing about the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby.

It's stupidly insulting what was probably his interns joke leading to this. That young woman's accomplishments which were normally a footnote's pimple in the butt of any major news organization suddenly says it detracted from what they have done?
Her "moment" since Imus' gave her any consideration, negative or otherwise, gave them the greatest exposure they could ever ask for.

Don't get me started about the Anna Nicole thing, when all the major news networks give it breaking news status, It'll only make me change the channel.
who cares about a drug addicted doxy?
Slublog has linked World War Z many times, but there is one thing it touched on that has stayed with me. The effect of the media and how sensationalism has become the normal status quo.
It's a sad decay of what was a respected bastion of truth.

Plus, the book had zombies.

The media decline is really sad when you realize the incredible history of mass communications.

Somewhere, Johann Gutenberg is slapping his forehead, wondering why he bothered.

Maybe the serious news blackout means the Surge is working.
