Why is Giuliani so Popular?
A commenter on ace's site asked the question in the comments, and it got me thinking. It's a good question. Rudy Giuliani is almost the anti-Republican candidate. He's a RINO - he's pro-choice, anti-gun and pro-gay marriage. He was mayor of one of the most Democratic cities in the United States and he's been married three times.
So why is he beating every other candidate hands down in the polls? While I believe the entry of Fred Thompson could alter the race completely, I think there are a number of reasons why Rudy is so popular:
He's not John McCain - I can't stress this one enough. John McCain is simply deluded if he thinks he'll be the Republican nominee next year. After campaign finance reform, the Gang of 14, the anti-tax cuts stance, the criticism of the Swift Boaters (while ignoring the Bush AWOL story), the flip-flop on the religious right, and the promise to close down the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, conservatives just don't trust McCain to do the right thing. The guy's worn out his welcome, and Republicans are looking elsewhere.
He's a son of a b**ch - Rudy is a fighter. After seven years of watching George W. Bush acquiesce in the name of " the new tone," Republicans are ready for a guy who will fight the Democrats and have a little fun with the media. When I saw Rudy back in 2004, he tossed out the red meat along with the policy. He was funny, sarcastic and entertaining. I think Republicans are ready for a guy who likes to scrap. Giuliani fought the mafia. Guy's got what it takes to fight the Democrats.
He's Reaganesque - Yes, he's a moderate/liberal Republican. But he loves this country and is not afraid to talk about it as the shining city on a hill.
Rudy is not the perfect candidate, but he's a darn good one. I'm not a Republican, so I have no say in the primaries, but if he's the candidate, I'll support him.
