Valentine's Day Leads to Crime

Men, who among us has not been in this position? Valentine's Day is fast approaching, your significant other is expecting a gift and you're completely broke.

Of course you're going to attempt armed robbery.

BANGOR — The masked teenager who allegedly pointed a loaded gun at a clerk in a local convenience store told police he fled empty-handed when the man behind the counter told him to put the gun away and asked if he and his juvenile companion were idiots.

The two, along with a third teen who allegedly drove the getaway car, remained in custody Thursday.

The alleged plot to rob the Neighbor-Hood Market on the corner of Stillwater Avenue and Grove Street was hatched Wednesday morning because the three needed money to buy cigarettes, gas and Valentine’s Day gifts for their girlfriends, according to court documents.

Sure, what these guys did is technically a "crime." But think of the pressure we put on young men this time of year. We're practically forcing them into a life of crime in a futile attempt to satisfy the chocolate, stuffed animal or jewelry demands of the women in their lives.

I blame Hallmark.
