Tancredo Goes Day Without Headlines, Panics

Tom Tancredo protests the non-airing of a Border Patrol ad by the NFL during the Super Bowl.
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) scolded National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell in a letter Thursday for refusing to run a Border Patrol recruitment advertisement during the Super Bowl.Last time I checked, the NFL is a private organization and has the right to refuse or accept ads for any reason. Tancredo may disagree with their decision, but he should really avoid using language like this:Tancredo, a 2008 presidential hopeful, said not including the ad in the program "makes it appear as if the NFL opposes the Border Patrol." The lawmaker is a major supporter of increased border security and outspoken opponent of any amnesty granted to anyone who has entered the country illegally.
"I think it is a mistake to assert that the basic existence and function of the Border Patrol is so controversial as to merit an outright rejection of its proposed advertisement," he said.
Tancredo suggested that the NFL should guarantee the Border Patrol ad space in next year's Super Bowl and make a public statement expressing the league's support of the Border Patrol's mission. It is not the place of a Congressman to tell a private industry what to do, even in suggestion. The NFL, as a private business, can believe what it wishes about the Border Patrol - they don't need or deserve to have some headline-hungry congressman "suggesting" what they should do or what ads they should run.
Trying to push private industry around is a funny thing for a "real conservative" to be doing.

Who said this?I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me... [Read More]

Man, you've really got a problem with that guy.
That's ok, guess. But I've got to say that he has brought important issues into the open that need to be talked about. I'd rather have a guy like Tancredo who is on an important problem than most of the other skunks in Congress who spend all their time thinking about money, or whacking the President, or tearing the country down, each in his own special way.
It seems to me you've been doing some mind reading on this guy. You don't seem to like his motivations, personality, looks, or anything he says. I wonder if you know something about him that I don't, because I think a lot of people are closer to his views on illegal immigration than the Presidents'.
This isn't a slam, and I'm not looking for an argument. I just think that there is a very large number of people in govt who are doing a hell of a lot more damage, and a hell of a lot less good, than Tancredo. So, I wonder why you have to give the guy a kick every week.
Thanks.

I don't agree with the president on illegal immigration, and I don't agree with Tancredo. Oddly enough, I'm probably actually closer to Tanc's position on the issue than the president, but I don't like the Colorado Congressman.
The reason I mock Tancredo is because I don't like demagogues. Tancredo is an attention seeker above all else - whether it's immigration or "bomb Mecca" rhetoric, the only thing that Tancredo seems to care about is seeing his name in the headlines. He has little thought or care for how his words will come across or what damage they will do to creating sound policy.

Ok, I'll grant that for arguments sake.
How does that make seperate him from so many other members of Congress?
Is he as much a camera hog as Schumer? Biden? McCain? Lott? Jackson(pick one)?
These guys are all publicity whores. Why not slam some of them on a more regular basis, rather than make Tancredo your one-stop whipping boy?
I read you regularly, here, at AoS etc. I know you're a level headed guy. But I think you have a blind spot when it comes to Tancredo.
I just can't figure out why.
Later.

Lott actually used to be the whipping boy, but got boring. The reason I pick on Tancredo is because I simply don't like the guy and think he represents a wing of the party that I don't want to see gain much power in the next few years.
You know...this might make a good blog post.
Be right back...
