Levin Gives the Post a Scoop

Almost everything about the Washington Post's big scoop...is wrong. Turns out most of the damning quotes cited as being from the report were actually from the office of Senator Carl Levin. Ace nails it:
The correction, of course, does not quite capture the enormity of this error -- breathlessly labeling a partisan liberal Democrats' "conclusions" as if they were the indpendent, nonpartisan official conclusions of the Bush-run Pentagon. How could they really convey how massively they f****d up here? This is, in journalistic terms, simply catastrophic.According to commenters at Hot Air, television reporters are still running with the original, wrong, story."Confirmation bias," they call it-- the press simply will run anti-Republican stories that ought to sound a little implausible or sketchy because, to them, they sound pretty darn reasonable. Such "facts" are "self-checking" -- they just prove themselves by how wonderfully they fit in with the liberal worldview.
The media jumped all over this story because those quotes just sounded right, I suppose. When a story doesn't fit their preconceived biases, they go to extremes to debunk it. Note the difference in effort made. When Barack Obama was accused of attending an Islamic school, CNN sent a reporter to another continent to find his classmates. When a Pentagon intelligence report is issued, the reporter doesn't even bother to a)read the actual report; b)pick up the phone and call someone who might be able to tell him the "too good to be true" quotes he's got are untrue.
I wonder if Walter Pincus is on the phone right now with Ted Kennedy. I hear the Massachusetts senator gives a great quote.
