"Fire Department Concerned As Closed Bridge Creates Detour Over Frozen Lake"

Yes...you read that right. People would rather drive over a frozen lake than put up with a detour.

A bridge in Ellsworth that closed Tuesday morning is forcing drivers on a 20 mile detour around Graham Lake. Some drivers are avoiding the detour by using the frozen lake as a short cut, and that has the city and fire department very concerned.

The fire department posted signs discouraging people from driving on the lake as a way around the closed bridge. The city can't barricade the make-shift road they can only warn people of the danger. If a car accident happens on the lake, the fire department is making it very clear they will not risk taking their trucks out on the ice.

Okay, 20 miles is a long detour. But given the choice between driving an extra half hour and driving over ice?

Yup, this is an odd state. But I still like it here.

Slu,

I live in Minnesota, where ice fishing is not only an activity, but an industry. I do not ever plan, however, to EVER drive or ride on a frozen lake with anything heavier than a snowmobile (of which I own none). I see these people in pickups on the ice all the time, and I shudder to think about the chance they are taking.
