"The Pledge"
I think it's safe to say the conservative blogosphere is getting tired of Congressional Republicans. I was disappointed, but not surprised, to see that Senators Snowe and Collins are involved with the non-binding resolution.
They are both "11/7 Republicans" - more concerned with their political fortunes than with what withdrawing from Iraq will mean for the people in that country. As a constituent, I ask both of them to reconsider their support for this empty piece of political theater.
A lot of people have signed that pledge so far. If these Republican senators go forward with their resolution, it's going to be a bad 2008 for the GOP.
UPDATE - I should add, however, that I'm dubious as to whether a surge will work given the current rules of engagement and strategy. Not to mention increasing evidence of a lack of professionalism in the new Iraqi army. What bothers me about the actions of Snowe and Collins is that they were perfectly happy to support the war when it was popular, then change their minds when the political winds no longer blow in that direction.
Those two are political weathervanes.
UPDATE II - Doug at Bogus Gold throws down. The guy makes a compelling argument here:
Yep. He's specifically called out Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman as a target of his wrath should he fail to fall into the pledgee's litmus line. Therefore it is not at all a stretch to say Hugh believes the nation is safer with national security votes in the Senate cast by Norm's likely '08 Democratic opponent, Al Franken, than cast by Coleman. But I still think the nonbinding resolution does more harm than good - it can't be doing much for morale. All it's doing is allowing the pontificating puffbags in the Senate to get themselves on television, looking "moderate" and "concerned."
Doug's right - the war is too important to be left to a party that won't fight it, but I think it's also too important to be the subject of pure political theater.
