Stupid Never Works, Kids
A second student has been charged in the Bucksport CD case.
ELLSWORTH — A second Bucksport High School student has been charged with terrorizing in connection with a music CD he and a friend created that included violent lyrics depicting a shooting spree at a high school. It's sad that these kids did something foolish enough to get them expelled and now charged, and I hope the courts are not too harsh. However, to action there is consequence. The Hancock County District Attorney’s Office has filed formal charges in 5th District Court in Ellsworth against Colton Crane, 17. Crane is scheduled to make his first appearance in court today.
Crane and fellow student Jonathan Hayes, 17, are the members of a band that created the CD and who wrote and performed the songs on it.
Several of the songs contained disturbing lyrics, but the one that drew attention from authorities was "Shotgun Killing Spree," which described a shooting spree inside a high school.
The Bangor Daily News site allows for comments, and among those at the bottom of the article linked above are the usual cries about freedom of speech. I've dealt with this subject before, but the alarmism in some of the comments likely echoes the feelings of many in the overall community, so allow me to highlight a particular phrase in the story that explains why the police are doing this:
Although the song did not mention anyone by name, it specifically referred to the shooting of the principal and vice principal as well as teachers and students. The lyrics also mentioned Columbine High School, and at the end of the song, referred to Bucksport High School. After mentioning shooting certain people (named by occupation), the boys made the mistake of naming the school. This took the song from a general statement of teenage angst to what could be perceived as a specific threat against the students and staff of Bucksport High School.
This is not to say the kids should be locked up, but they should get some sort of punishment (and a wee bit of psychological help) that conveys the seriousness of what they did.

i think the boys did nothing wrong and if different was thought then they should have done what they tell students to do, talk to each other about the issue. I think that insted of expelling them they should have gone to the boys and asked them about the song. But insted they made quick judgements and now they boys are ones who have to suffer with that. The Schoolboard made a mistake.
