"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

A great essay from the New York Times about nutritionism.

And you’re much better off eating whole fresh foods than processed food products. That’s what I mean by the recommendation to eat “food.” Once, food was all you could eat, but today there are lots of other edible foodlike substances in the supermarket. These novel products of food science often come in packages festooned with health claims, which brings me to a related rule of thumb: if you’re concerned about your health, you should probably avoid food products that make health claims. Why? Because a health claim on a food product is a good indication that it’s not really food, and food is what you want to eat.
The guy seems a proponent of the so-called "real food" movement, but makes the case for eating food, not food-like substances, pretty persuasively.

I tend to ignore most dietary advice, as it is often contradictory and confusing. As this essay points out, what was once considered "bad" is now good and vice versa. Maybe it's just time to get back to the basics - eat real food, cook it yourself and eat less of it. Sounds like good advice to me.

Watched "supersize me" on MSNBC.

Anyone who thinks this is anything other than an anti-corporate, anti-meat propaganda piece is a retard.

5 - 10 minutes of random sampling demonstrated that when I watched the FIRST broadcast, and now that I'm watching the whole broadcast, I am disgusted that this is treated as a real "documentary of american lifestyle," anyone who thinks this is a real representation of common life is a pathetic propagandist, eager to feed on the ignorance of "elites" ODD that it's the Elites who are this fucking stupid!

My daughter had to watch "Supersize Me" in her Health class at school. She won't eat at McDonalds, now.

"Supersize Me" is silly propaganda masquerading as a documentary. Spurlock has found a nice niche making movies and television shows that really aren't all that different in concept from a reality show like "Survivor."

I thought a much better treatment of the fast-food culture was the book "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser. Sure, the guy has an agenda, but he isn't anti-fast food or anti-meat. He focuses instead on how our desire for fast food has led us to cut corners and over-process to the point of unhealthiness, not to mention tasteless food.

I haven't actually eaten at McDonald's for nearly a year. The food just doesn't sit well with my stomach anymore.
