It's a Wonderful Life?

Dang, this is a depressing movie. The scene where George trashes his models and goes to Potter is just heartbreaking, and shows that Jimmy Stewart was not given enough credit for his acting ability.

I know the movie ends well, but until that point, it really is quite a dark journey through the life of a man who thinks he's a failure.

It is kind of depressing for a while, but as you say, it turns out well in the end. And I made an interesting discovery. The (uncredited) black man playing the piano when Stewart and the angel go into the bar is Meade Lux Lewis, one of the greatest exponents of the boogie woogie style.
