Charges Dropped Against Duke Players - Updated

Allah's got the story, and the updates. The timing of the announcement, just before a holiday weekend is a bit suspicious. Nifong had no problem parading this case before the media in the past. He's self-delusional if he thinks he can make it go away by downplaying it now.

I think the fallout from this case will be widespread. I fully expect that we will soon begin to hear calls for the resignation of Duke University President Richard Brodhead. This letter is a low point in the university's handling of the case. Note how much time Brodhead spends talking about the social, sexual and racial aspects of the alleged crime before reminding readers that these guys are innocent until proven guilty.

As the case against the players continues to fall apart, Duke alumni may begin to start withholding donations out of frustration with Brodhead. The lacrosse coach was forced to resign because of the alleged rape and there may be legal ramifications to that, given what we know now. There will be a lot of lawsuits before this all settles down, and Duke may be the defendant in a few.

Then there's Nifong. I hope he loses his job, and the power to practice law. His abuse of the justice system in this case has been disgraceful.

Mary Katharine - "It's about damn time" and Betsy Newmark asks a very good question.

UPDATE - Brodhead covers his behind. I think he sees which way the winds are blowing on this one.
